A Weekend Getaway in Tbilisi, Georgia

Return to Journal

What a weekend! My three friends and I had just two days, but we filled them with mountain air, sweeping views, historic architecture, and plenty of Georgian wine.

Day 1: Snowmelt, Views & Alpine Cuisine

We hit the road from Tbilisi early in the morning, with our destination set: the iconic Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, also known as the Friendship Arch. This semi-circular stone and concrete structure features a colorful mural that winds around its inner walls and overlooks the stunning Caucasus Mountains. In early April, the snow was melting, making the views especially breathtaking. Gudauri, nearby, is dotted with resorts and shops where travelers can take ski lessons or rent equipment.

After a chilly start, we warmed up with hot khinkali (dumplings filled with meat or vegetables), gooey khachapuri (cheese-filled bread and my personal favorite), and glasses of Georgian wine. Every bite felt like a hug from this beautiful country.

That evening, we returned to the city center and strolled along Shardeni Street. Cozy wine bars lit up the night, with traditional live music, good company, and the perfect atmosphere to close out our first day.

Day 2: Wine, Old Town & Farewell

The next day was all about wine. We headed to Chateau Askana, a modern winery offering tours, tastings, and a shop stocked with bottles and souvenirs. We walked from vineyard rows to the factory floor, learning about the winemaking process while sampling sparkling wines and rich reds.

Later, we explored Tbilisi’s Old Town, wandering cobblestone lanes and admiring centuries-old architecture. At the Sioni Cathedral, scarves were available at the entrance for visitors to wear as a sign of respect.

Before heading home, we tried something unforgettable: wine ice cream. It was phenomenal! We wrapped up the trip at a local spa that left us relaxed and ready for our flight.

Falling in Love with Tbilisi

Two days were all it took to fall for Tbilisi: from mountain vistas and historic streets to delicious food and world-class wine. This weekend getaway proved why Georgia is a destination that stays with you long after you’ve left.
