Today you’ll explore Chalon-sur-Saône, located in southern Burgundy at the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise wine region. Explore the city’s medieval center on a guided tour and learn about its rich history. Alternatively, visit Beaune, a walled town surrounded by the vineyards of the Côte d’Or, where you can stroll its cobblestone streets and see the striking mosaic-tiled roof of the 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu, once a hospital for the poor. Later in the day, enjoy a scenic cruise to Tournus, sample the region’s celebrated Mâconnais white wines, or opt for a guided bike ride from Chalon-sur-Saône to Tournus.
*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today offers several ways to experience the charm of Tournus and Mâcon. Join a guided tour of Tournus, including a visit to the impressive Benedictine Abbey of Saint Philibert, or visit the moated Château de Cormatin, dating back to the early 17th century, known for its elegant interiors and manicured gardens. Another option is an excursion to the medieval village of Brancion, where you’ll see its well-preserved gateway, church, and market hall. Later, enjoy a scenic cruise to Mâcon – or, if you prefer, cycle there on a guided bike tour or visit a local winery for a tasting before rejoining the ship in Mâcon.
Join a guided tour of Mâcon, often called the “Southern City of Burgundy,” to learn about its vineyards, museums, and historic sites—and perhaps about its most famous native son, the poet and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine. Alternatively, travel to Cluny to visit its remarkable abbey, built between the 4th and 12th centuries and once the largest church in the world, a striking example of early Romanesque architecture. You may also choose to explore the Royal Monastery of Brou, a 16th-century Gothic masterpiece known for its intricate detail and craftsmanship. Return to the ship for a light lunch on the Sun Deck as you cruise toward Villefranche-sur-Saône. Along the way, enjoy a tasting of Beaujolais wines as the scenery drifts by.
Explore vibrant Lyon, beginning on Fourvière Hill, part of the city’s UNESCO-listed historic district and home to the 19th-century Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Continue into Old Lyon for a guided walk through the St. Jean district, where you’ll discover the city’s distinctive covered passageways known as traboules. Food lovers may choose a tasting tour in Vieux Lyon, sampling regional specialties in one of France’s most celebrated culinary capitals.
For a more active option, join a guided bike tour through the city along a section of the ViaRhôna bike route, or take a guided hike from the ship to the Monastery at Mount Pipet for sweeping views over Lyon.
Enjoy your morning coffee on the balcony or sundeck as you cruise to Viviers. Discover this beautifully preserved medieval town on a guided walking tour, passing 16th- and 18th-century landmarks along narrow cobblestone streets. For a more active option, explore by bike or take a guided walk to a scenic overlook of the city.
Alternatively, visit the hilltop village of Grignan, an enchanting Provençal town known for its Renaissance castle. There, join a local farmer and his dog for a truffle-hunting experience in search of the prized “Black Diamond.” Later, return to Viviers for a special guided tour led by costumed interpreters who bring the town’s centuries of history and legends to life.
Arrive in Avignon, known as the “City of Popes,” which served as the center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century. On a guided walking tour, visit the grand Papal Palace and the medieval city walls that encircle Avignon’s UNESCO-listed old town. Alternatively, sample local specialties at three venues around the city, including macarons, regional cheeses and wines, and Provençal tapenades.
Later, rejoin the ship in Arles, one of southern France’s most picturesque towns. Explore its highlights with a guided tour of the Romanesque cathedral and ancient amphitheater, or opt for a guided bike ride to nearby Roman ruins. Art enthusiasts may choose a walking tour dedicated to Vincent van Gogh, including a visit to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, which celebrates his time in Arles.
Bid farewell to your vessel and disembark in Arles, where you will catch your flight home or continue to your onward destination.
