Day 1: Arrive in Friuli

Welcome to Italy! Upon arrival at the airport in Venice, you’ll be privately transferred 1.5 hours to your hotel for the next three nights in Friuli.

Located in Northeastern Italy, the Friuli region is known for its historic towns, alpine landscapes, and unique blend of cultures from nearby Slovenia, Austria, and Italy. Your hotel for the next three nights is located in a historic castle in the countryside of Buttrio.

Located in a historic castle, Castello di Buttrio offers elegant country-style accommodations in the countryside of Buttrio. With a garden, the property is a 20-minute drive from Udine. Day 2: Prosciutto Tasting and visit to San Daniele

Set out for a full day of exploring the Friuli countryside. Your day begins by getting to know one of Italy’s most iconic culinary traditions: Prosciutto di San Daniele. This ham, protected under the DOP label, owes its unique flavor to the area’s particular climate—shaped by both Alpine and Adriatic influences. Tour a local prosciuttificio to learn about the production process, then enjoy a tasting—often paired with regional wines and cheeses—that highlights the prosciutto’s delicate, nutty flavor.

After, enjoy free time to explore picturesque San Daniele, a charming hilltop town known for its 18th-century cathedral and Renaissance frescoes on the Sant’Antonio Abate church. Nearby, in Spilimbergo, you’ll explore the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli—an institution dedicated to the ancient and evolving art of mosaic-making.

Day 3: Mount Forno Hike

Lace up your hiking boots and set out on a hike on Mount Forno. This rewarding 4-hour hike takes you through the scenic borderlands of Italy, Slovenia, and Austria. The trail begins in the small hamlet of Poscolle and winds through forests and meadows, with expansive views of the Karavanke range, Julian Alps, and Mount Dobratsch in Austria.

Along the route, you’ll pass historical markers like old boundary stones and traces of former settlements, offering insight into the area’s layered past. At the summit, wide panoramic views and peaceful surroundings provide a memorable highlight to the day’s journey.

Return to the hotel in the afternoon and have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 4: Wine Tasting and Travel to Trieste

Day 5: City Tour of Trieste

Today, enjoy a private guided walking tour of the fascinating city of Trieste, located on Italy’s northeastern Adriatic coast. With its blend of multiple cultures, Trieste is a unique destination shaped by centuries of cross-border history.

The tour begins at San Giusto Hill, the city’s historic core, where you’ll visit archaeological sites including a Roman basilica, theater, and the medieval cathedral and castle. As you continue through the city, you’ll explore the Teresian district with its grand palaces and stroll through Piazza Unità d’Italia—one of the largest sea-facing squares in Europe.

The tour also includes a visit to Miramare Castle, a 19th-century residence set in a lush botanical park overlooking the sea. The castle and grounds offer a glimpse into imperial life and showcase the natural beauty of the coast. After the tour, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Trieste at your own pace.

Day 6: Slovenia Day Trip: Postonja Caves and Predjama Castle

Check an additional country off your list as you visit Slovenia today. The day begins with an early drive from Trieste to Slovenia’s Postojna Caves, one of the world’s longest and most impressive karst cave systems.

Upon arrival, you’ll explore on an underground electric train, followed by a walk through the remarkable cave formations. After exploring the caves, enjoy a traditional Slovenian lunch at a nearby restaurant, followed by a short drive to the spectacular Predjama Castle. Built into the face of a cliff, you’ll learn all about this dramatic fortress’ unique construction and rich history, all set against a stunning natural backdrop.

At the end of the day, return to Trieste and have the evening at your leisure.

Day 7: Enchanting Aquileia and Travel to Venice

Bid farewell to Trieste and travel to Venice, with a stop on the way in Aquileia, a city of great historical and cultural significance. Once the fourth most important city in the Italic peninsula and a major center of the Roman Empire, Aquileia was founded in 181 B.C. and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Roman Forum, the ancient river port, patrician house remains, the National Archaeological Museum, the Early Christian Museum, and vast burial grounds.

After your visit, your journey continues to Venice. Upon arrival at Venice’s Piazzale Roma, you’ll board a private water taxi which will take you directly to your hotel for the next two nights.

Day 8: Full Day in Venice

Today, you’ll experience the true essence of Venice with a private half-day walking tour led by a local expert. Your guide will meet you at your hotel and take you on a journey through both the iconic highlights and the quieter, lesser-known corners of the city.

Explore St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Marciana Library, the Clock Tower, and the Bridge of Sighs. As you continue through the historic Rialto area, your guide will share insights into Venetian life, architecture, and history while navigating the narrow calle and lively campos. The tour concludes at the Rialto Bridge and Market, a hub of daily life and one of the oldest marketplaces in Venice.

Your day also includes a self-guided visit to St. Mark’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Inside, you’ll discover over 43,000 square feet of gold mosaics and intricate marble floors, all set within the grandeur of a structure built to house the relics of St. Mark.

The rest of the day is yours for the taking. Sample Venetian cuisine at canal-side taverns and historic cafes, check out more of the local museums, or simply stroll the streets and take in this mesmerizing city.
