Day 2: Exploring Ljubljana

Cityscape of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.

Set out today to explore Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital and one of Europe’s greenest cities. Your walking tour begins with a visit to Ljubljana Castle, a medieval fortress atop a hill that was built in the 12th century. Rather than a traditional guided tour, you will experience the castle firsthand. Step into a time machine and travel through six key periods that have shaped the history of Ljubljana Castle and the development of our city.

After, take a funicular ride and enjoy a magnificent view of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Mountain Range. With your local guide, check out the city’s beautiful bridges and buildings designed by Jože Plečnik, Slovenia’s master of early-modern, minimalist design. Visit the Square of Three Bridges, which connects Ljubljana’s old town to the modern city, and explore cultural landmarks such as the National Museum and the Opera House. Stroll along the leafy banks of the emerald-green Ljubljanica River, which flows through the heart of the city.
