Day 1: Welcome to Baja

Welcome to Baja! Today you’ll arrive at the airport in San Jose del Cabo where you will be met by your guide for the 90-minute transfer to Todos Santos. Upon arrival, get settled into your accommodations, then enjoy a welcome dinner with a trip briefing from your guide.

Los Colibris Casitas was made for nature lovers seeking beauty, tranquility, and adventure. This charming accommodation offers all the services and amenities of a boutique hotel, combined with the privacy and comfort of a vacation rental. Each of the casas and casitas has magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, a freshwater estuary and a palm grove oasis to the front, and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains to the side and back.

From your casa you can watch the fishermen cast their nets on the beach in the early morning light, wait for the green flash of a magnificent Baja sunset in the late afternoon, and enjoy the vast expanse of a star-filled sky at night. Los Colibris is just a 10-minute walk to 70 miles of pristine, virtually empty beach, and a 5-minute drive to the delightful restaurants, artists’ galleries and shops of Todos Santos

Day 2: Todos Santos by Horseback and Surfboard

Set out on an adventurous horseback ride along the pristine shores and beautiful beaches of Todos Santos. Afterward, head to Playa Cerritos, which boasts one of the best surf breaks in all of Baja. Here, you’ll have a surfing lesson from a veteran surf instructor, guaranteeing that even first-time surfers will stand up and ride a wave before the end of the lesson!

Day 3: Pacific Bluffs Hike & Cooking Class

Baja, Mexico

Set out on a half-day hike featuring spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and several of the beaches in the area of Todos Santos. The trek typically begins at Punta Lobos, the sweeping Pacific beach where the local fishermen launch their boats each morning and bring in the daily catch each afternoon. Throughout the walk you’ll have the stunning view of the desert landscape meeting the sea. You’re likely to spot whales from this high vantage point during several months of the year, and you’ll pass an active sea lion colony. Your guide will offer in-depth commentary on the terrific variety of flora and fauna you see, as well as the history of the area from the human perspective. After about 3.5 hours or so of walking, you’ll arrive at the idyllic beach of San Pedro where a picnic lunch will be waiting.

In the evening, enjoy a hands-on experience with food, drink, and plenty of fun! Local lawyer-turned-chef Iker Algorri leads this wonderful Mexican Cooking Class, where you’ll do everything from learn how to make the perfect margarita, to perfecting local Mexican dishes.

Day 4: Transfer to Sierra de la Laguna

Today you’ll transfer to Sierra de la Laguna. The Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve on the southern tip of the Baja peninsula is one of Baja´s most beautiful but least explored areas. Part of an island off the coast of Baja 10 million years ago, the Reserve is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Upon arrival, settle into your luxury tented camp in the mango and grapefruit grove of a local ranching family.

Camp Cecil de la Sierra is a luxury tent camp in the mango and grapefruit grove of a local ranching family in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve of Baja California Sur, close to the town of Todos Santos. The camp highlights both the cultural and natural heritage of the Sierras. The family is an integral part of the experience, providing all the meat, cheese and tortillas for the camp, and sometimes acting as guides in the reserve.

The accommodations are beautifully decorated walk-in tents with real beds, linens, rugs, bedside tables, lamps, mirrors, chairs, towels, and rocking chairs on the patio. Each tent has a private compost toilet cabaña, and there is a shared shower cabaña. Activities include beautiful hikes in the reserve with spectacular views, swimming in watering holes and picnicking by waterfalls. There is fantastic birding in the mornings, and amazing star gazing at night.

Day 5: Explore the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve

Set out to explore the dramatic landscapes of the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve. You’ll be in the company of a skilled naturalist guide as well as your local hosts, and will have the opportunity to choose from wonderful cultural activities as well as those that are more nature-focused and/or active. Set out for a day of hiking, hands-on tortilla and cheese making classes, horseback riding, birding, star gazing, and more.

Day 6: Travel To Isla Espiritu Santo

Isla Espiritu Santo, Mexico

You’re off to ultra-pristine Isla Espiritu Santo today! First, you’ll transfer about 90 minutes to the city of La Paz, located on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja Peninsula. Here, you’ll make a stop at the warehouse to get geared up with snorkeling gear and wetsuits. After that, you’re off to the island by small boat, arriving to a warm welcome and a tasty lunch.

Located on the pristine and uninhabited Isla Espiritu Santo is Camp Cecil De La Isla, a truly unique beachfront glamping experience. The camp sits on an idyllic beach facing calm waters that are home to all manner of marine wildlife. The snorkeling, stand-up-paddleboarding, and sea kayaking opportunities are not to be missed!.

Despite the light footprint of the camp, you'll find it quite comfortable. At the heart of the camp is large, canopy providing shade for dining, gathering, and lounging, whether it be at breakfast or cocktail hour. The camp is fully staffed with adventure guides, naturalists, and a chef.

Guests sleep in oversized dome tents (with real beds and sheets). The camp also has composting toilet cabanas and solar-heated shower cabanas (with plenty of privacy in each).

Day 7: Explore Isla Espiritu Santo

Today is yours for the taking. Your naturalist guides are dedicated to ensuring each day includes as much as activity (or relaxation) as you like, and will lead a variety of activities including snorkeling, sea kayaking, and hikes at designated areas on the island. World-famous SCUBA diver Jacques Cousteau described the waters around the island as “The Aquarium of the World” due to abundance of marine wildlife found in the pristine environment. While exploring, you might encounter whales, whale sharks, rays, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, and all varieties of fish.

Day 8: Depart Isla Espiritu Santo And Explore The Bay Of La Paz

La Paz, Baja, Mexico

Today you’ll head to the town of Laz Paz. La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and a great jumping off point for all the adventures that the Sea of Cortez holds. It is a waterfront town with a charming malecon (boardwalk) along the sea, marinas full of sailboats and yachts, and terrific local eateries.

Located in La Paz, Hotel Catedral is near all the major attractions in the city. Rooms are neat and are equipped with TVs, bathrooms and safety deposit boxes. The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, bar and restaurant. Visitors can enjoy nearby attractions and activities such as Playa Balandra, whale watching and fishing.

Day 9: Magdalena Bay

This morning we’ll transfer the 4.5 hours to Magdalena Bay, have lunch, then head out onto the water for 3 hours of interacting with the amazing gray whale mothers, babies, young couples and sporting males.

Magdalena Bay is the largest wetlands ecosystem on the west coast of Baja and one of the most important in North America. The World Wildlife Fund ranks it as one of the most important coastal habitats in Mexico. The Bay is the prime calving ground for the gray whale, and January to March it is possible to see a large number of whales, including mothers and calves. Magdalena Bay also has mangrove forests, barrier beaches and sand dune islands, all of which contribute to the incredible scenery and biological diversity of the area.

Simple and on the waterfront, the rustic cabañas of Mar y Arena offer a place to relax, dine and refresh after a wonderful day on the water with the gray whales of Magdalena Bay. All the hotels in Magdalena Bay are very basic as the gray whales are in the lagoons around these small fishing towns for such a short period of time. Mag Bay therefore offers the combination of a world-class, peak life experience (interacting with the whales), with a hotel experience that ensures you'll appreciate the other accommodations on the trip all the more.

Day 10: Morning Grey Whale Watching, Transfer To Todos Santos

This morning, head back out onto the lagoons of Magdalena Bay by boat to spend another half day with the grey whales. You’ll then transfer south back to Todos Santos, a drive of approximately 4.5 hours which will be broken up by a tasty lunch along the way.

Day 11: Depart Baja

Say adios to Baja and transfer to the airport for departure.
